Data Foundation

Asset inventory completeness, naming conventions, and data quality

We have a complete and up-to-date asset inventory in our DCIM platform covering racks, power circuits, and cooling infrastructure. We use consistent naming conventions for assets, locations, and circuits across DCIM and other systems (ITSM, CMDB, network tools). Our DCIM data has a defined owner responsible for accuracy, completeness, and regular audits. We have a process for validating data quality (duplicate detection, orphaned records, stale entries) at least quarterly.

Integration Architecture

API availability, authentication standards, and data flow documentation

Our DCIM platform exposes REST or SOAP APIs that are documented and accessible to our integration team. We use standard authentication for API access (OAuth 2.0, API keys with rotation policies, or service accounts with least-privilege). We have documented data flow diagrams showing how DCIM data moves to and from other systems (ITSM, CMDB, monitoring, BMS). We have a middleware or integration platform (iPaaS, ESB, or custom layer) rather than relying on point-to-point scripts between systems.

Operational Processes

Change management, monitoring, and incident response integration

Changes to DCIM configuration or data models go through a formal change management process before deployment. We actively monitor our DCIM integration endpoints (API health, data sync status, error rates) with alerting. DCIM alerts and events feed into our incident management workflow (tickets auto-created, severity mapped, escalation paths defined). We have runbooks or automated procedures for common DCIM integration failure scenarios (sync failures, stale data, API timeouts).

Team and Skills

Integration expertise, vendor relationships, and training

We have at least one team member (or external partner) with hands-on experience building and maintaining DCIM integrations. Our DCIM vendor provides adequate technical support for API and integration questions (not just basic product support). Our team understands the data models of both DCIM and the systems we integrate with (field mapping, data types, constraints).

Strategic Alignment

Business case, stakeholder buy-in, and roadmap

We have a documented business case for DCIM integration that ties to measurable outcomes (cost reduction, faster provisioning, reduced risk). Key stakeholders outside the data center team (IT leadership, facilities, finance) understand and support the integration initiative. We have a phased integration roadmap with clear milestones rather than attempting a big-bang integration project.
